Goals, Growth, and Connection: Reflecting on an inspiring 2024

If I had to choose one word to sum up how I feel about 2024, it would be inspired.

At the start of the year, I set some ambitious goals—some might call them overly ambitious—and honestly, they intimidated me. Here’s what I had in mind:

  • Reduce my body fat by 3%.

  • Run three 5Ks.

  • Read 13 books (three of them non-fiction—a stretch for this fiction lover).

  • Reconnect with my spiritual side through a yoga and meditation routine.

  • Explore more of Maine and tap into my sense of adventure.

  • Build my professional network and learn from my peers during my first full year at a new company.

I also set intentions about how I wanted to feel:

  • Create a sleep routine so I was well rested each morning.

  • Keep my personal space tidy for better mental focus.

  • Nurture my relationships with the people I hold close.

  • Move my body for at least 30 minutes daily, no excuses.

Looking back now, it wasn’t checking off these goals (or in some cases, missing the mark entirely) that made 2024 so inspiring. It was the people, the places, and the stories I encountered along the way.

The year brought unforgettable experiences beyond Maine. During yoga retreats in Costa Rica and Vermont, I felt deeply connected to myself and others in stunningly beautiful settings. The conversations, laughter, and shared stillness both with friends and alongside people I barely knew—and yet somehow felt completely at home with—were soul-nurturing moments that will stay with me.

Closer to home, Nick and I embraced adventure in a way we never had before. We bought a camper and set out to explore more of Maine, discovering new corners of this breathtaking state. My favorite? The Rangely area, hands down. Climbing Bald Mountain and conquering my fear of heights, thanks in part to the 70 year old woman who did it before me, to reach the top of the fire tower was a defining moment. The 360-degree view from the top was worth every anxious breath—and I felt on top of the world in more ways than one.

Early in the fall, I had the honor of beginning my participation in the 8-month long Hanley Leadership Development program, which quickly became a profound source of inspiration. Each session is a masterclass in growth, both professionally and personally, and the incredible leaders I met challenge and enrich me in ways I hadn’t expected.

Another source of inspiration came from witnessing true resilience up close. Watching my mom come back after years of battling a disease made me step-back and admire her strength. She didn’t give up when she could have, and her determination reminds me that inspiration often comes from the people we love the most and the quiet battles they fight every day.

Perhaps the most inspiring part of the year, though, was experiencing the kindness and generosity of our friends, family, and community. It left me speechless. When disaster struck Nick's hometown of Spruce Pine and the surrounding area, people rallied, donating an incredible amount of money and supplies for us to use toward disaster relief. Their compassion and willingness to help people they may never meet reinforced just how strong and beautiful human connections can be.

They say success takes a village, and I felt that truth deeply this year. Whether celebrating a win or processing a setback, having a strong support system elevated every experience. Why wouldn’t you want a crew to high-five you when you cross the finish line—or pour the wine when you’re recovering from a stumble?

Take the 5Ks, for example. I knew I needed to train and actually learn how to run. So I reached out—talked to seasoned runners, gathered tips, and figured out what worked for me. Sharing my goals was a game changer; every time I crossed a finish line, there was a network of cheerleaders celebrating with me. Those conversations and shared experiences opened doors to new friendships and a connection to a larger running community.

Not every goal made it into the "done" column this year—my small group coaching program might just find its moment in 2025—but each aspiration brought me closer to myself, to others, and to a sense of curiosity I hadn’t felt in a while.

As 2024 comes to a close, I’m reminded that growth is never a solo journey. The inspiration we gain from people and places along the way is the real victory.

Here’s to another successful, adventure-filled year ahead.
